One year from today on February 17th 2009 analog television as we know it will be turned off.
What this means for us production types:
- Over-the-air television reception will require a digital television (or a set-top converter box) plus a different type of exterior antenna
- Those of us pursuing better quality HD production won’t have to talk about the future as much
- Those of us who use wireless devices (like microphones, video links, etc) will have an increasingly harder time finding clear space. (This is part of the reason why I switched to 2.4Ghz wireless audio systems in ’07)
Check out the FCC auctions to see who has bought the current frequencies and what their intentions are.
